Linguistic Cues to Deception Assessed by Computer Programs: A Meta-Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research syntheses suggest that verbal cues are more diagnostic of deception than other cues. Recently, to avoid human judgmental biases, researchers have sought to find faster and more reliable methods to perform automatic content analyses of statements. However, diversity of methods and inconsistent findings do not present a clear picture of effectiveness. We integrate and statistically synthesize this literature. Our meta-analyses revealed small, but significant effect-sizes on some linguistic categories. Liars use fewer exclusive words, selfand other-references, fewer time-related, but more space-related, negative and positive emotion words, and more motion verbs or negations than truth-tellers.

Challenges in Automated Deception Detection in Computer-Mediated Communication
Deception detection remains novel, challenging, and important in natural language processing, machine learning, and the broader LIS community. Computational tools capable of alerting users to potentially deceptive content in computer-mediated messages are invaluable for supporting undisrupted, computer-mediated communication, information seeking, credibility assessment and decision making. The ...
متن کاملLinguistic Cues 1 Linguistic Cues for Deception Detection in Online Mafia Forums
The detection of dishonesty in computer-mediated communication such as emails, blogs, and online forums is of utmost importance for many governmental, financial, and educational institutions. Several studies have attempted to identify linguistic cues that reliably distinguish deceivers from truth-tellers, but have typically used highly artificial experimental constraints over a very limited per...
متن کاملWhat Lies Beneath: The Linguistic Traces of Deception in Online Dating Profiles
This article investigates whether deceptions in online dating profiles correlate with changes in the way daters write about themselves in the free-text portion of the profile, and whether these changes are detectable by both computerized linguistic analyses and human judges. Computerized analyses (Study 1) found that deceptions manifested themselves through linguistic cues pertaining to (a) lia...
متن کاملElicitation, Recast, and Meta-Linguistic Feedback in Form-Focused Exchanges: Effects of Feedback Modality on Multimedia Grammar Instruction
This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...
متن کاملAnalysing Deception in Written Witness Statements
Written witness statements are a unique source for the study of high-stakes textual deception. To date, however, there is no distinction in the way that they and other forms of verbal deception have been analysed, with written statements treated as extensions of transcribed versions of oral reports. Given the highly context-dependent nature of cues, it makes sense to take the characteristics of...
